Vienna Registry Office:
Costs, Dates & Flow

Vienna gives you style, history and grand backdrops. A few clear decisions up front, and in the end you chase no appointments, you simply live the moment.

Updated: July 2026

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Costs: 70 to 170 euros in the district office room, external venue from around 995 euros plus room hire (wine tavern from about 500 euros, palace over 2,500 euros).
  • Date: secure popular Friday and Saturday dates at least around six months ahead, register online via the ZPR and ZSR registers.
  • Documents: valid passport or ID card and birth certificates. If your data is in the ZPR, many proofs are often no longer needed.

Dream wedding at a Vienna registry office

If you have chosen a wedding at a Vienna registry office, you have chosen well. As a Vienna wedding photographer I've photographed civil ceremonies for more than ten years. I see what works, and what couples would do differently in hindsight.

Vienna’s registry offices at a glance

In Vienna, municipal department 63 is responsible for weddings, and the city is divided into districts. Even though you can choose your ceremony location freely, the formal side often runs through the office responsible for your residence. For you that means planning two things in parallel: secure your preferred date and place first, then handle the formalities in good time.

The six-month logic

Many couples reserve dream venues far in advance, while deadlines apply on the administrative side. It feels contradictory but is easy to solve: block the reservation day like an appointment, and register early in the window, not at the end. If your data is cleanly recorded in the Central Register of Civil Status, the conversation at the office is shorter. Clarify this early, especially with international documents, previous marriages or different citizenships.

Where the “I do” becomes an occasion

There are the classic office rooms, and there are external places where registrars come out to you. These dream venues of the Traumhochzeit office bring atmosphere and often better photo spots on site. The statutory fees for such a ceremony run from around 500 to 650 euros depending on the documents. On top comes room hire: from about 500 euros at a wine tavern to over 2,500 euros at the Belvedere. A simple ceremony in the district office during office hours remains the most economical option at roughly 70 to 170 euros.

If you want something especially grand, our Palais Coburg guide covers one of the most luxurious ceremony venues in the city. And for the time before, an engagement shoot is often worthwhile, the best rehearsal for the camera on the wedding day.

Before deciding, it helps to look honestly at your day:

  • Is the time such that you get 15 to 25 minutes of calm couple photos after the ceremony?
  • Is the way to the photo spot short enough, without a big transfer?
  • Does the crowd and bustle suit you, or do you want deliberate quiet?
  • Is there an indoor area for rain that looks good and has room for congratulations?
  • Are all the routes manageable for your most important guests, even when time is tight?

I cover civil ceremonies from 990 euros, including timeline advice beforehand, so there's enough time for the ceremony, congratulations and couple photos. First images arrive the very next morning.

Flow and timeline

Registry offices aren't photo studios: tight rooms, technical light, a limited window. What counts is the way of working. Quiet, precise, close. The images afterwards should feel as though no photographer had been in the room. A typical flow looks like this:

  1. First contact and plan: location, time, guest numbers, routes and a plan B for rain.
  2. Preparation: check light and surroundings, plan the photo spot within walking distance if you wish.
  3. Ceremony: work discreetly, capture you and your guests, not just the signature.
  4. Congratulations: often the strongest images, because the tension eases.
  5. Family photos: with a list, so we're through in little time.
  6. Couple photos: 15 to 25 minutes, calm, close, with Vienna behind you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the right date for a wedding at a Vienna registry office?

The Traumhochzeit office usually accepts bookings six to eight months in advance. That's your earliest starting point for popular Friday or Saturday dates in spring and autumn. For a ceremony at the district registry office during office hours you often have more flexibility, sometimes even at short notice. My tip: fix your preferred date and location first, then register within the right window.

Which documents are needed for a civil ceremony in Vienna?

Austrian citizens usually need a valid passport or ID card and both birth certificates. If your data is already recorded in the Central Register of Civil Status, many proofs are no longer required. International documents or non-EU nationals bring additional requirements, which you should clarify directly with the responsible registry office. Allow at least four to six weeks before the date.

What does a civil wedding in Vienna cost?

A ceremony in the district office during office hours costs between 70 and 170 euros for all administrative fees. External ceremonies via the Traumhochzeit office, for example in a venue of your choice at the weekend, start at around 995 euros plus room hire. The venue itself costs between roughly 500 euros at a wine tavern and well over 2,500 euros at a palace like the Belvedere. On top come photography, flowers and everything that makes your day.

When is the best time for couple photos after the registry office?

Right after the congratulations, when the tension has eased and the shoot gives you some time to yourselves. For summer dates I recommend the morning in the city centre, when fewer people are about. For afternoon dates the light from around 16:00 is warmer and softer. For couple photos I usually plan 30 to 60 minutes, straight after the ceremony and family photos.

Can you marry civilly on a Saturday in Vienna?

Yes. Saturday dates are especially popular and usually run through the Traumhochzeit office at an external venue of your choice. In the district office rooms, weekend dates are limited depending on the location. For a Saturday in spring or autumn you should be early, ideally six to eight months in advance.

How many guests can attend the civil ceremony?

In the office room the number of guests is limited by the room size, often to around 20 to 40 people. At an external venue you celebrate with far more guests. Clarify the exact number directly with the responsible registry office or the venue.

Do you need witnesses?

In Austria, witnesses aren't mandatory. You may name up to two witnesses if you wish. They need a valid photo ID and should be able to follow the language of the ceremony.

How long does the ceremony take?

A civil ceremony usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes, depending on whether there's music, a personal address or a ring exchange with more time. That compactness is pleasant for the photos, it leaves more time afterwards for congratulations and couple photos.
