A wedding at Hernstein Castle offers both: historic state rooms in their original condition and a ceremony out in the green, right by the water. The castle lies about 45 minutes south of Vienna in the Triesting Valley, set in an English landscape park with a pond that mirrors the castle's bright facade.
The castle owes its present appearance to Theophil von Hansen, the architect behind Vienna's Parliament and Musikverein. From 1856 he rebuilt the house for Archduke Leopold in the English neo-Gothic style; the frescoes are the work of painters such as Christian Griepenkerl and August Eisenmenger. For wedding photos, that means backdrops you will not find anywhere else, from the turrets and battlements to the paneled state hall.

The venue at a glance
Today the castle operates as a hotel and event venue, pairing the historic main house with a modern guest wing:
- state rooms preserved in the original, for ceremony and celebration, from a simple setting to lavish decoration
- the castle's own chapel for weddings from 15 people, celebrations up to 100 guests with a party
- a picturesque courtyard and an expansive castle park with pond and lakeside pavilion
- 71 rooms and 3 suites in the guest wing, plus restaurant and wellness area
- a team that plans your celebration from start to finish and coordinates all the vendors
Ceremony by the lake and in the park
The heart of a Hernstein wedding is the pond. After the ceremony on the meadow across the water, you cross the pond in a rowboat, a symbol of the new path you share, while your guests applaud from the shore. The reception follows beneath the old, mighty trees of the park.
Speaking as a photographer: this rowboat crossing is one of the most rewarding moments any Austrian wedding venue has to offer. The castle behind you, the water, the waiting party on the shore, pictures like these tell the story on their own.
Three places for your ceremony
For the ceremony itself you have a choice of three places at Hernstein Castle. Outdoors, it is the meadow on the far shore of the pond, under a pavilion with a view across the water to the castle. Indoors, you can say your civil "I do" in the historic state rooms, whose paneled walls, gold ornaments and chandeliers offer a setting no registry office can match; the registry office of the municipality of Hernstein is in charge. For a church blessing there is the castle's own chapel, which gives ceremonies in an intimate circle a beautiful setting.
Staying overnight at the castle
One thing that sets Hernstein apart from many castle venues: after the party, your guests do not have to go anywhere. The modern wing holds 71 rooms and 3 suites, plus a restaurant and wellness area. Your wedding turns into a full weekend: welcome dinner the evening before, the big day itself, and a shared brunch the morning after. So you begin your first night as a married couple with no taxi and no curfew.
What does a wedding at Hernstein Castle cost?
There is no public price list for Hernstein Castle. The costs depend on the building blocks you combine: guest count, the rooms you choose, catering from buffet to multi-course menu, plus the hotel rooms for you and your guests. After a first conversation, the team prepares an individual offer and plans every detail with you.
What can be said: in reviews, wedding couples consistently praise the venue's value for money. As everywhere, popular summer dates go early, so inquire in good time. How to divide your overall budget wisely is covered in my guide 10 mistakes in wedding planning.
If it rains
A rain shower is no cause for worry at Hernstein. The state rooms are only a few steps away, and for the couple session the rule is: rain can make pictures possible that sunshine never would. An umbrella, a flash from behind, and what looked like bad luck with the weather becomes the most striking image of the day.
The best photo spots at Hernstein Castle
After several weddings at the castle, I know the corners where the strongest images happen:
- The stone balustrade by the pond. From here you look out together across the water at the full facade, the classic Hernstein motif.
- The rowboat. Out on the pond, the castle behind you, your guests on the shore. No other place in Lower Austria offers this moment.
- The English neo-Gothic facade in evening light. Turrets and battlements glow warm as soon as the sun sits low.
- The state rooms. Paneled walls, gold ornaments and crystal chandeliers frame portraits like a museum, except you are standing in the middle of it.
- The park with its old trees. Soft meadow paths and plenty of green for the quiet pictures of just the two of you, away from the party.
If the day runs long, the dark castle park at night becomes a stage for flash photography, from an illuminated umbrella in the rain to a silhouette in front of the floodlit facade.
Details that make the day special
The expansive park can handle the grand gestures too: a white horse-drawn carriage for the arrival, a LOVE sign on the meadow or an open-air reception.
If you are not even engaged yet: for the proposal there are dedicated arrangements by the lakeside, with a rowboat ride, dinner and stylish decoration on request. They are created by Vienna Picnics by Maggy Müller, who also conceived the Celestial shoot at Hernstein Castle, from the moon swing to the jewel-toned florals. It was published several times over, with photographs by me and Sebastian Hochleitner: on the Austrian wedding portal Austria Wedding, in the European Elopement Guide and by the international wedding magazine Wedding Chicks. How to capture that moment is covered in my guide to the engagement session in Vienna.
Experienced partners on site
If you would rather not organize everything yourself, there are professionals who know Hernstein Castle well: Julian Amenth · Weddings & Events plans and designs weddings at the castle, Vienna Picnics by Maggy Müller handles styling, picnic setups and proposal arrangements, and the florals come from Dolls Blumen Wien.
